ABOUT | Biography | Artist Statement | CV Exhibitions

From a Portuguese aristocratic background, born in Africa in one of the former Portuguese colonies, Angola.

Pedro established his career as an artist in London, graduating with a BA in Fine Art.

Sousa Louro has had numerous careers, including TV presenting and modelling, for almost 17 years but has always lived on drawing cubist images.

Now a full-time artist, Pedro transfers his soul into his studio.

Originally from Portugal, Estoril Cascais moved to the UK over 30 years ago to study his passion for art. He graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1997 and continued his second degree in 2011 in Abstract Vision and Modern Expressionism at Kensington and Chelsea Art College University.

His work portrays feelings, emotions, and perceptions -consciously and unconsciously- through detailed geometric compositions balanced with lines and shapes. Using multiple techniques in each artwork, his concern lies with creating a dialogue with colour and form rather than over-focusing on the subject matter. Numerous materials, such as textiles, reclaimed wood objects, old journals, and wallpapers, come into play during the artist's process. With canvas or wooden panels for a base, these are combined with rustic deteriorating metal elements, created through a technique he developed using oxidizing copper powders. Combinations of letters and numbers are applied to balance the composition, and finally, each artwork is finished with yacht varnish.

In Pedro’s work, you can see his dialogue with the evolution of colours and geometry despite his preferences for contemporary artists like Francis Bacon and Ben Nicholson. His reminiscence comes from the "neoplasticism" of Mondrian, Robert Rauschenberg, and, in some way, Picasso. Still, the most crucial influence of Pedro’s creativity is Ben Nicholson, where Cubism has been part of his life. Only in the early part of his career, in his more recent research and studies, does he combine Cubism and abstract expressionism in just one practice as he creates his works. He uses Pollock's technique of "dropping" but with the order and sense of Rothko.

In his artistic abstract contemporary modern expressionism and cubist language attempts, he tries not to stick with just one technique because he does not stress regarding the subject matter as long he achieves what he wants in the geometrical creativity and almost in an architectural statement. Pedro focuses only on the compact geometric detailed balance of each composition he designs and concentrates on the final details, such as making each colour interact and building an artist's creative personal architectural statement in his last pieces.

A textural tangibility is immediately evident in Pedro Sousa Louro’s work. Earthy and material-focused, an unassuming beauty is found within the play between dark woods and a muddied palette. Furthermore, geometry plays a crucial role here, as clean white lines converse with blocks of muted colour. There is an almost archival, collage-like approach to applying materials and hues. It is as if Sousa Louro has assumed the archaeologist role, unearthing forgotten layers of history. Educated at Chelsea College of Arts, Sousa Louro is among the most talked-about LGBTQ artists.

Pedro has been featured over the past years in worldwide publications, such as British Vogue, Vanity Fair, House and Garden, Tatler, Wall Street Journal USA, Observica Canada, and other global publications and art magazines.

In 2021, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the former Portuguese Ambassador Manuel Lobo Antunes honoured and congratulated Sousa Louro in person at a state lunch in the London Portugal Embassy for his astonishing work outside Portuguese territory and for representing his country in the art world.

Pedro Sousa Louro has collectors around the globe, including Europe, the Middle East, India, Australia, the US, Russia and South America.

"My artworks are all around mixed media mediums and after developing the next idea with the final vision of a painting. I started the craziness of searching and finding materials that I needed. On bases, I use wood panels, canvas, and wood with canvas sheets fixed on them, which I do by myself. My studio realizes all my artworks are framed with mostly only mid-century style. My conscious and unconscious visual perceptions create my paintings, which are the precise language and message I receive from my creative nervous system.

In my compositions, I also use textiles, old wood objects, old journals with prints, and old wallpapers incorporated with rustic deteriorating geometrical metal elements in each piece from a technique I developed over the last few years by oxidizing copper powders. I finalized each composition with combinations of letters and numeric symbols. After trying a few varieties, I found a set of numbers and letters I like seeing together. Horizontally or vertically, I incorporate straight lines in different colours to balance all compositions so I can achieve the level of abstract vision that, for me, is satisfactory, and this is where I find the beauty of the work that I was looking for and eventually make a decision to stop and then the piece is complete. I finished the piece by varnishing it with yacht varnish. I may change the kind of varnish I use in the future. Still, at the moment, I can not find another way to make myself happy and secure enough to decide to let the artwork leave the studio and be exhibited. I'm almost addicted to this particular varnish, and it is a matter of sorting out another solution shortly.

I've never been interested in painting beautiful paintings.  The kind of beauty art images that most public viewers feel connected to straightaway by the simple fact that the piece shows the most ordinary and "acceptable" beauty that makes them think less about what they see. I mean the "beauty" that others find straightaway in traditional or ordinary art pieces. I refuse to paint and be an artist of beauty and conventional art, even if my pieces take longer to sell. I aim to develop and predesignate the facts of the creative process I have evolved and practised over the years by focusing on architectural forms and designs from my studies and research, together with abstract geometrical visions from our cosmopolitan living. I make art through my imagination by using geometry for geometry's sake. It is indeed my crucial creative tool and also my way to demonstrate my knowledgeable vision of other angles of beauty with different perspectives and levels to see, maybe accept and also interact with my personal abstractive geometrical visionary eye of beauty or perhaps also to find a new level of beauty through my work."
